Ken you might want to

Take a look at what is available from the Land Down Under

Alesis AL3101 DSP (the very cheap 16-pin one)
Alesis AL1201 DAC
Alesis AL1101 ADC

Do a search for Graeme Zimmer he is doing some interesting work related to
amateur radio.   I think he is a ZL ?

I am working on a simple DC receiver that I can connect to a nice audio DSP
system.     Plan on starting with the DSP-10 audio only then to move on to
something else.

Also check Leon Heller G1HSM    Leon has a web site

There are a few other good DSP sites relating to ham radio.    One is a JE
and then their is the DSP radio by the SM5
