I, too, had the same experience at 8:01 PST (didn't realize AD was in MA<G>
Thought that was Burr-Brown's home base) although I did not get 3
transfers...I said "I have a web order to discuss with someone and the first
person put me straight to Mark. We had an intelligent, civil 5 minute
conversation...I was buying it to get hands on DSP experience to compliment
my HC11/12/16 and AMD 520 Elan skills and whereas $89 was something I could
....."piss away on a lark"...sorry, couldn't think of a more polite way at
say the same thing (it is still early for my brain to beworking.....I won't
be driving a automobile for atleast another 2 hrs ;-) and that the company
was not paying for this item. Long story short, he offered to ship at the
$89 price as I was talking about whether we had time to stop the order
shipping or if I should just refuse to accept the UPS delivery and have it
returned to sender.
I think you are right about the profit margin...these kits are usually put
out to entice engineers to get their feet wet on the product with minimum
effort and expense, hoping that if you get comfortable with the AD DSP's,
you will use them when the equivalent Mot or TI parts have approx the same
performance and price. And it works pretty well. I am comfortable with the
HC11 family.....I look at the MicroChip PIC parts and say, for the few
dollars difference in price, I will stay on familiar ground. I should also
add that I usually do design work for specialized instruments and devices
that may have sales of 200 to 300 a year. If I ever did something in the
thousands a yr....different story. I'd get up to speed on the PIC parts in
a New York Minute.
YMMV and all that.
