Boy Gary, I would stay away from the 16-series PIC even if it was substantially
cheaper. I'm not a software pro, but developing solid firmware on the PIC is
nasty business. I've traumatized enough brain cells using that    %&!*!!
screwball architecture. Linear memory addresses (in lieu of 256 instruction
pages and RAM distributed over different pages) forever. I should have switched
to the Atmel AVR years ago.
