When I came home from the service as a Radioman 1st Class in 1968 I used Ed Knolls' book to study for the Commercial Radiotelegraph 2nd License. Even with that book I still needed to brush up on International Q signals.

I took the test in New York City, which was a thirty-five mile trip for me. The test at that time was actually in three parts. The first part was the multiple choice on radio law and operating procedures, the second part was the drawing of a few schematics and troubleshooting a few circuits with stated problems - required what to test for and what to expect. If you did not score high enough on the multiple choice then the other two parts were not given. If you scored enough on the first two parts then the third part a receiving and sending five minutes of error free international morse at 20 WPM. If you did not bring your own key or bug then you used the FCC's old morse key.

I guess due to preparation and a fair amount of luck I passed on the first try. Because I already had shipboard experience in the USCG I was able to bypass the six month at sea requirements for my USCG Radio Officers papers.
