Lets not forget that Edison also invented motion pictures,
or at least a system that succeeded. The film still in use, 35mm
wide and 16 frames per foot originated with Edison. He also made
some very early experiments with talking pictures using a
phonograph synchronized to the projector. It was not successful
due to the lack of electronic amplification. I think this is well
covered in the history of film. You know of course that disc
records were invented by Emile Berliner. He had a protracted
patent fight with Edison over precedence and won. Hence the name
Victor Records, they were the victor. I knew Emile's grandson
Oliver Berliner fairly well but have been out of touch with him
for years. He tried for years to buy back the original painting
of "His Master's Voice" but was unable to. When the painting was
sold to Berliner it showed a _cylinder_ machine. It was painted
over by the artist with a disc player after Victor aquired it.
The dog "Nipper" was reportedly well named because he snapped at
anyone who got near him. It hung (and may still) in the executive
offices of EMI.
