I remember from a booklet, (Seinen en Opnemen) written for future hams
back in the fiftees in Dutch language, which published also official
requirements for commercial telegraphists, for first class examination
hand sent with a straight key 25 wpm plain text was required and 20 wpm
for code groups. David Ring explained recently that the dit speed
actually was the same for words PARIS (plain text at 25 wpm) and CODEX
(code groups at 20 five chars random groups per minute). So the dit
speed (shortest time interval of space between the elements of a
character, was 16,6 dits per second = baud rate for code and also for
plain text. That is because PARIS takes 50 dits in 60 second for 1 wpm.
Now you present a few samples, and I measure the speed of a sample of
text presented, by counting the number of dits during the time the
sample used.
First sample : = arriverai gare nord minuit =
10.93 s and 256 dits, that is 28 wpm
Obvious hand sending, due to irregular speed. I took a fast part of the
whole sample.
Second complete sample:: ation acceptyour proposal abrasion slabber
pannel propose commending with galte
tooks 35,98 s contains 734 dits so 24.48 wpm. Failure for the speed test
of first class commercial telegraphist!
Do I make a calculation error? I hope so.
