Acoustic recording, sound into a horn then to a recording needle and
cylinder or disc required excellent articulation, which kept up for a while
with later electronic recording with microphones and amplifiers and a
direct connection to the needle which made the recording master.

It's amazing Edison was involved in sound and film recording as well as a
telegraphed and made some interesting inventions in telegraphy allowing one
telegraph wire to be used for several independent circuits using
multiplexing. http://ethw.org/Quadruplex_Telegraph
