I think our fellow Morsecodians would enjoy a reply to the Blind Carbon
Copy (BCC) I sent to Betty Newkirk, widow of my friend Rod Newkirk,
W9BRD/VA3ZBB of my last message to this reflector.

She mentions going through Rod's papers:
I hope she is able to come out with some abandoned manuscripts that Rod
hadn't published.

Rod was one of the most talented writers that I've ever read, the others
besides Rod are Bill Coughlin of the Boston Globe, and John McPhee,
surprisingly, I've met the last two, McPhee was getting off the MV Stella
Lykrs/WPHZ when I joined her and we said "Hello" to each other, the other
at my local church, which he attended daily along with his boss departed
wife who taught thousands of children in my mid sized town meeting town. I
do wish I'd told McPhee that he is the only author that I could recognize
by the way he wrote. He writes like Rod Newkirk. Later I read "Looking
for a Ship", I read all about the visitor who had visited my ship and who I
had passed that day!

Life is amazing!

Hi again - -I wanted to add another "Thank you" about your kind comments
about me and also that mentioning I was not a member of your group. I would
love to be a member but I must tell you that I am not a contester except on
the odd occasion. Your group is new to me but perhaps you can give me some
information.

Your interesting comments about Gil I did enjoy. I have some of his
original cartoons here along with his book "GIL" A Collection of Classic
Cartoons from QST. Rod and I would talk about Gil at times and I was
surprised to learn that when Rod approached Gil to ask him if he would draw
Jeeves, Gil agreed but with the stipulation that Rod had to supply all the
ideas for the cartoon. This was a challenge for Rod I would think, along
with the responsibility of writing the articles each month.

I have an almost complete collection of QST's, some years bound, mostly the
years when Rod was writing, "How's DX". Rod and I would often go to
hamfests and had luck finding copies of QST.

I am still going through Rod's papers, letters etc. but rather than throw
them out I have discovered, except for the odd exception, I cannot and so
that means more "stuff" to keep, but I think we are all the same with some
of our "treasures".

73 and enjoy each day
Betty
