I'm an old broken down Navy Radioman with bad ears, and I use the narrowest
filters --- 50Hz usually --- consistent with a good run rate. Always.
If my contesting run rate is in the 100Q/hr rate, I obvioustly am hearing
enough signals to keep me busy. If some station calls me outside my filters
he'll need to retune until I hear him.
If the run rate is extremely poor (under 35Q/hr) I will sometime go to a
wider filter.
Regarding sidetone --- a good transceiver will be designed to match your xmt
offset to the same frequency as your sidetone offset. Both my Icoms and
every other modern rig back to my old Heath SS9000 observed that convention.
