"X" is a cross. The Latin word for "across" is "trans". Hence XMTR XFMR
XSTR, and of course,
XTAL for crystal. Happi Holidays

I always suspected that X came to be an abbreviation for "Chris" or
"Crys" by association with either Christmas or Christianity. Thank you
for verifying that. How is it that X also can be substituted for "trans"
as in XFMR and XMTR?
