Hi,
My thoughts on this one being that it is a very loose association with -
A 'transfer' can be associated with the movement of something or thought or
action from one place (or side) to another.
Hence the idea of a cross of one line over the other. A simple way of
illustrating it.
The X becomes a convenient symbol.
Not scientific or researched, just my thoughts.

I always suspected that X came to be an abbreviation for "Chris" or
"Crys" by association with either Christmas or Christianity. Thank you
for verifying that. How is it that X also can be substituted for "trans"
as in XFMR and XMTR?
