[CW] methods to increase code copying speed

One more thought (for now)...

One thing that has been holding me back has been my choice of sending
with a straight key.  I've had a love affair with straight keys for
quite a few years now and had totally abandonded my keyer.  I reallized
that my speed was locked into how fast I used the straight key.  So, I
am now re-learning the paddles.

My first time back on the paddles was during the NAQCC sprint a couple
of days ago.  I couldn't believe how stupid my thumb had become!  :-)

I'm still re-learning the paddles (if we chat, be patient) but my QSOs
are faster now.  I'll continue with the SKs but will balance my time
with the keyer.

The short answer is to practice.  Do lots of listening....have some good
ragchews....don't be afraid of making mistakes or missing words, etc.
As far as priorities in learning to copy fast CW, closely following
practice is do not copy on paper what you are hearing.  This is one of
the most difficult crutches to get rid of, so as soon as you can, begin
making one or two word notes to remind you what the other station has
just said.  (The older I get, the more important these notes become,
hi.)

That's my take on it....

I'm sure others will have some very worthy advice.
