I became a ham and selected my career path because of BOYS LIFE.  In 1951,
shortly after the FCC announced the Novice license, BOYS LIFE ran a lengthy
article on ham radio.  (Featuring Vic Clark, W4KCF, who later became
president of the ARRL.)  That was when the bug bit me  (although I didn't
get my first license until the '60s--  WN2VMQ).

I find it interesting that in those days the common entry path was the
Novice license--  you came in on HF CW, just like a "real ham".  Now the
common entry path is a Technician license--  you come in on 2-meter FM, a
parallel universe to the "real hams".
