As I read over the message I just sent, it dawned on me there were at
least two other significant factors at work to produce the spurt in ham
licensing about 40-60 years ago.
One was the cold war, which generated in a lot of us both a curiosity
about strange, possibly "forbidden" places as well as consciousness of a
need for "preparedness" (didn't every boy scout troop in those days
encourage SWLing and ham radio? BOY'S LIFE sure did).
The other was Sputnik (1958), which both greatly expanded and greatly
improved science teaching, esp. in middle and high schools (my 8th grade
science teacher was a ham; I was licensed in 9th grade; not a coincidence).
