And don't forget our friends in CO land. Many of the rigs there are
homebrewed with components from old Russian TV sets or whatever else can be
scrounged. Have listened to CO2OJ describe the lengths the amateurs in Cuba
go to for even scraps of wire sturdy enough to make VHF antennas let alone
transmitters and receivers.

Actually, I don't find a slight chirp or raspiness objectionable, if the
signal is otherwise stable and narrow. If I hear one of these signals
calling CQ, I usually reply to it. Many times, the station is using
homebrew and/or vintage equipment and the operator is very knowledgeable
about the technical aspect of radio, and other subjects as well. They
usually are aware of the chirp or tone. I find this type of QSO much more
enjoyable than many of the ones from the plug-'n-play right of the box types
with perfect-sounding CW but whose conversation ability does not extend
beyond the WX and the op's latest ailments.
