[CW] CW travails

Where do all those stations go between contests?  I'm not a contester 
myself, but since contest exchanges are basically rubber stamps, I wonder 
how many of the high speed contest operators could carry on a  real 
conversation on CW and discuss diverse topics?

I notice you fellows in Canada did not rush to the bottom edge of the band 
with phone signals when the Canadian subband system was eliminated; I still 
hear a few VE's just below the US phone portion, but that's about all.  I do 
hear Spanish speaking phones all the way down to the band edge on 80 and 40.

Since the BBC shut down their North American service and others like Radio 
France International drastically reduced their number of hours on shortwave 
(budget problems, no doubt), the international BC bands are being filled 
with wild-eyed fanatics and other rubbish.
