High Wind Watch
Statement as of 12:44 PM PST on November 18, 2009
...High wind watch in effect from Friday morning through Friday
evening...
The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a high wind
watch...which is in effect from Friday morning through Friday
evening.
* Timing: wind speeds increase on foothill locations early Friday
morning...with windy conditions expected in all locations by
late Friday morning. The strongest winds occur late Friday
afternoon just ahead of the cold front.
* Winds: south to southwest winds of 25 to 40 mph should be common
with gusts of 60 to 70 mph possible. It is possible for foothill
locations to see even higher wind gusts Friday afternoon...
especially along the Sierra front from Susanville south. Winds
over the Sierra ridges will be as high as 125 mph.
* Impacts: winds of this magnitude may be damaging if precautions
are not taken beforehand. Strong Crosswinds will make travel
hazardous...especially in high profile vehicles. Winds may also
create areas of blowing dust with visibilities below one mile
downwind of Dry Lake beds.
Precautionary/preparedness actions...
A high wind watch means there is potential for strong damaging
winds to affect the area. Move trashcans...patio furniture...and
other loose items indoors or secure them. Motorists should
prepare for difficult driving conditions. Continue to monitor the
latest forecasts at weather.Gov/Reno.
