Flood WARNING
425 PM PDT Mon may 23 2005

...A Flood Warning has been issued until further notice...

For the mainstem Walker River in Lyon County Nevada...including
Mason...Yerington and Wabuska.

Moderate lowland flooding is expected.

Warm temperatures and snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada has caused a
significant rise on the mainstem Walker River from Mason to
Wabuska...including the Yerington area. The Walker River will
remain high through the week above Weber Reservoir...and moderate
lowland flooding will occur. Lowland flooding was occurring in the
Mason area Monday afternoon...with some minor flooding of yards and
basements reported by Lyon County officials. Sandbagging of some
structures was necessary. River levels will likely increase
slightly over the next few days due to warm temperatures and
continued snow melt. Releases from Topaz and Bridgeport reservoirs
have been decreased which will lessen flood impacts.

For the mainstem Walker River near Wabuska...the stage at 2 PM
Monday was 9.2 feet. The unofficial flood stage is 9.7 feet. The
river will slowly rise to near the unofficial flood stage by
Tuesday. Moderate lowland flooding...with some minor flooding of
yards and basements...is expected to occur.

Anyone venturing near eastern Sierra rivers and streams...such as
kayakers...rafters...and anglers...should be aware of the high and
cold flows. Keep small children well away from rivers and streams
as they can easily be swept away.

Valuables and livestock should moved away from locations subject to
flooding. Never drive through flooded areas. Follow the directions
of emergency officials. Stay tuned to the latest developments by
monitoring forecasts from the National Weather Service...or your
favorite news source.

Real time stage and flow information for many rivers and streams in
the eastern Sierra and Nevada is available from USGS on the internet
at: http://waterdata.USGS.Gov/NV/nwis/rt ...in lower case.

The next forecast update for this locations will be issued by 11 PM
Monday.
