Because -- with the possibility of getting hit with a Cat 3 hurricane on
Sunday -- there's nothing we need more than a severe thunderstorm, it turns
out that the forecast for today includes heavy thunderstorms and possibly
severe thunderstorms. Everybody please be careful.

SEVERE THUNDER STORM THREAT FOR TODAY
The Storm Prediction Center has placed Connecticut in the SLIGHT RISK
category for development of strong to severe level thunder storms for this
afternoon and evening. The main threats will be damaging winds in excess of
58 mph large hail of 1 inch or greater and heavy rains leading to ponding of
water in low lying areas that are prone to urban flooding. There is a 2%
risk of an isolated tornado from any severe storms.
All three NWS offices have indicated that SKYWARN activation will likely be
required today. For spotters in the counties covered by NWS Taunton MA
WX1BOX will likely be staffed and operational by early afternoon today.
HURRICANE IRENE
The latest model forecasts track Irene as a category one storm making
landfall on the western side of Connecticut in the New Haven area by Sunday
afternoon. The storm will then track through the Connecticut River Valley
into MA by Sunday night. The system will bring torrential rains of 5 to 10
inches or more, coastal and inland flooding concerns, and hurricane force
winds of 74 mph or greater to the state.
The nest weather bulletin on Hurricane Irene will be issued this evening.
