I just got a call from Adam (W1ASB) to ask me to post a message on his behalf that he has arranged for a ham radio field trip to Sheffield Island for Sunday June 13. They've given him permission to bring his portable Yagi (for all of you with Yagi envy), a transceiver and a small generator.
Sheffield Island is an island in Long Island Sound reachable from Norwalk by ferry. It has an IOTA listing and is a desirable place to operate from because of all the people who will be wanting to get contacts from an island that rarely has any hams operating from it (in other words, we can expect a solid pileup all day long). With that Yagi of his, and being in the middle of Long Island Sound (salt water), it's possible that he'll be getting quite a few exotic QSOs.
According to the web site, the ferry goes over at 11am, 2pm and 3:30pm and it returns at 1:15, 4:15, and 5:45. Details about Sheffield Island are available on their web site
http://www.seaport.org/SheffieldEvents.html
Adam is planning to go over on the first ferry and I'm expecting to go with him. Once over there we'll set up and get on the air. We're not sure when we'll be coming back, although I personally do not anticipate staying until 5:45.
You're all invited to come over and join him. He will make sure that anybody who comes over will get to operate as a control operator (General class or above) so that you can get your share of interesting QSL cards.
Note that the island has water, soda and snacks, but will not have an operating restaurant/snack bar so you should bring a picnic lunch with you.
Adam does need to get a head-count of how many people are coming and he needs it by about a week before the field trip. Please contact him at w1asb.adam at gmail.com if you're interested.
