Hi Jim,
I have repainted several transformers in the 75A-4 and what I use is Rustoleum Smoke Gray #7786. It is very close to the original. It is however a gloss enamel and the original was a flat or satin finish but unless you are very fussy, I think this looks great. It is available in half pints most anywhere that sells Rustoleum.
I do not remove the transformer because in my opinion more harm than good can come of that. I do remove the rear panel and the top cover for access. I then use blue painters tape to carefully mask all around the transformer. Of course you should remove all loose flaking paint and sand lightly where you can prior to this masking step. I use a combination of artists brushes and carefully paint around the screws using with a tiny brush then I use a 1/2 inch flat artists brush for the body of the transformer.
Rustoleum flows very well and I have not expereinced any runs. I give it two coats for excellent coverage and to take care of any missed spots. The only hard to get to part is between the transformer and passband tuning assembly. I usually can get in OK but a small foam brush can be of benefit too.
I can send you a picture of what it looks like if you desire.
