Some would argue that the 51J-3 is the better receiver having wider IFs
with better phase response (less ringing from static crashes) for better
AM reception than the 51J-4.
And for the same reason would prefer the R-390 over the R-390A with its
mechanical filters. One of the major justifications for the creation of
the 390A was to lower cost of production.
Working on the R-390(A) can be a pain without lots of spare modules and
nonexistent module test jigs and extension cables. The construction of
the 51J family is far more conventional with nearly all of the circuitry
accessible once the jillion screws that hold the bottom plate on are
removed. That does make for a whole lot easier troubleshooting though
the chassis is fairly deep so getting to some components may require
pushing back cables to see those closest to the chassis surface.
