[Collins] I got nailed!

Seriously, did you happen to use UPS for shipping this
radio?

For over two years most of what I have received that
was shipped by UPS has been vibrated so much that
screws were loose, various components had been shaken
so badly that there were actually shorts, etc.
However, the boxes usually showed no trace of
mishandling. All of my UPS shipments go through the
Mesquite, Texas (Dallas area) center.

>From 1970 until 2 years ago I basically used UPS for
almost all my shipping needs. But, starting 2 years
ago I had so many problems on both outgoing and
incoming shipments that I switched to FedEx ground.
Haven't had any problems with FedEx including
receiving a few "boat anchors" that were very badly
packed. Everyone of them made it fine!

A few weeks ago a person in Florida had a Collins
R-388 in a factory cabinet picked up by UPS at my
house. When it arrived in Florida, the box was in
perfect condition. However, all four of the rubber
feet had been completely vibrated off of the cabinet
and the mode switch had actually be vibrated so badly
that it would not make a connection until the contacts
were put back in their proper position!

Damage has been happening to double and triple boxed
radios as well as three that were shipped in wooden
crates! Thus, I refuse to use UPS unless the person
who receives the unit has the unit actually picked up
at my location. My local UPS and FedEX counters are
less than 2 blocks apart so it doesn't matter in terms
of mileage. Also, FedEx ground usually runs about 70
percent of the cost of UPS.
