Buy a piece of steel or aluminum plate big enough to go behind the ring
gear several times thicker than the gear, as much as 1/4" thick. Cut a
slot to slide past the shaft. Pull on that instead of the gear and you
probably won't do so much damage to the gear. Try pushing the gear
further onto the shaft to see if there's a keeper ring or a wear bur
that's keeping it from coming off. Remove the ring or file off the bur
and you might get the gear off without damage.
