[Collins] UPGRADING THE 32S-1

The 32S-1, like the KWM-2 series, uses sidetone
generation for CW and not "true" CW like the 32S-3.
The 4 diode balanced modulator definitely helps, but
unless the transmitter is VERY carefully aligned, it
is possible to transmit 3 signals when operating on
CW: The desired upper sideband "faux" CW generated by
the single tone applied, the unwanted lower sideband,
and the residual carrier.
The 32S-3 uses an r.f. signal that goes around the
mechanical filter and one of the mixer stages is
keyed. The sidetone is used only so that you can
"hear" yourself and not for CW generation. This
keying of the mixer produces a "true" CW signal which
is normally "cleaner" than sidetone generation and
there is no possibility of getting the additional,
unwanted, signals.

But I've had no complaints about my 32S-1 with the
four diode balanced modulator mod (some SB covers
that) and a 150 volt zener diode regulating the screen
voltage to the oscillators.
