Sorry Yves, I have to disagree with the higher plate voltage on the 6146's. The extra stress on the components is living dangerously. Solid state on the LV supply, with dropping resistors, keeps heat and stress on the driver/receiver components down. I think the jury is out on replacing the 5R4. Slow start-up vs. 60-80 VDC additional plate voltage. respectively submitted, Jim > Yes ....I agree 100% to solid state the 5R4 no so sure about the 5U4 > Yes the 6146's are , beleive it or not very happy ( in SSB ) to get > 1000 -1100 volts or more on the plate ....it makes the screen very happy , > it reduces the screen current and screen dissipation .....when you know > that most 6146 are going bad from excessive screen current .......if the > plate voltage is too low , the screen start to think it is the plate and > intercept too much current , producing "secondary emission " ( the screen > is red hot like a 2nd filament ) . > I have been using 1200 volts on a KWM-1 since 1965 ( by using capacitor > input filter ) .resulting in 150 watts in SSB with no problem for many > years ........only very few 6146's dont like it . > 73 > Wn4i > Yves Pautard > 5833 Dryden rd. > West Palm Beach > Florida 33415.....561-689-8819 > > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "JAMES T BRANNIGAN" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> > Sent: Tuesday, May 21, 2002 9:01 AM > Subject: Re: [Collins] 516f2 > > > > First, solid state conversion is not a bad thing. > > The unloaded voltages are high, how much is WAY too high? > > Jim > > > > > > > bought a 516 on ebay, shame on me, got power supply and found it hah been > > converted to solid state using PART of one of the published converions > plus > > a bunch of other changes that are very hard to follow. checked voltages, > WAY > > to high. need info as to who can go thru and rebuild or source of detailed > > converson to re work my self. would really like to have some one do it,as > > time is one thing I don't a lot of. any help on this or even a another > 516f2 > > if anyone has one for sale. > > > thanks for taking the time to read this and all who helped with the > > question about the inner connect cables...THANKS! > > > dale K8PEO
