Yes ....I agree 100% to solid state the 5R4 no so sure about the 5U4 Yes the 6146's are , beleive it or not very happy ( in SSB ) to get 1000 -1100 volts or more on the plate ....it makes the screen very happy , it reduces the screen current and screen dissipation .....when you know that most 6146 are going bad from excessive screen current .......if the plate voltage is too low , the screen start to think it is the plate and intercept too much current , producing "secondary emission " ( the screen is red hot like a 2nd filament ) . I have been using 1200 volts on a KWM-1 since 1965 ( by using capacitor input filter ) .resulting in 150 watts in SSB with no problem for many years ........only very few 6146's dont like it . 73 Wn4i Yves Pautard 5833 Dryden rd.
