Not a unique idea Bob. The Venus I picked up back in the 90's  has a
mosfet preamp wired in. Of course, if the preamp was added shortly after
the Venus was originally acquired  back in the 60's, the nusvistor the
hottest thing around at that time for hams. Nuvistor converter and preamp
designs were all over the place. A solar minimum occurred around 1964
(Venus entered the marketplace I believe in 1964), so everyone was
looking for that extra db of gain to pull the signals out of the noise.

Nicely engineered, but having to diddle with the transmit offset control
on the rear panel and hope you didn't accidently move it at some later
time, was a pain.
