TO: ALL CALV ARES STATIONS
The month of October is a very active month for our ARES organization.
There are activities for everyone to participate to help so the burden is
not placed on just a few individuals. Some information concerning upcoming
activities is posted below and more detailed information will be emailed to
you when it becomes available. Thanks in advance for your support in these
events.
October 4 & 5, Friday PM - Saturday PM : SET 2013
October 19 & 20; Saturday & Sunday; JOTA (Jamboree-on-the-Air)
October 20: Sunday AM & PM: Cystic Fibrosis Cycle Event
SET 2013
Hi guys!
I am in the process of putting together a master plan for the upcoming 2013
SET. The dates will be Friday night ~ 1800 October 4 through ~1800 Saturday
October 5. It is not a continuous 24 event for everyone. We will all play
at different times according to a schedule I am working on.
It's Hurricane 'Chessie' coming up the bay, Friday, making a left turn at
BACO and out to GARR some time late Saturday. I plan to have MEPN be a
major player. There will be staggered activations throughout the event with
specific actions to be taken. WL2K will be the EmComm digi mode of choice.
Should be a fun event.
More on this as the plan gels. Please reserve this weekend and pass it
along to your contacts. . .ARES, non-ARES, clubs, etc. If you can get your
local served agency to open their EOC for this exercise, that would be
great. I wish to get the word out to every one in your county the best YOU
can. Everybody can be a player.
Jim Cross, please add excerpts of this brief to your monthly Section
Newsletter in Aug and Sep.
Stay tuned.

JOTA
JOTA (Jamboree-on-the-Air) weekend is coming October 19 and 20.
An annual Scouting event linking Scouts around the world using amateur
radio.
Now is the time to call your local scout unit and ask them to participate in
JOTA. There is no special way it is done; it can be in your home, at a
scout camp, at a Camporee or in a scout meeting room. All it takes is You,
a Radio and Scouts. I have found it works great with a partner or two. One
person can operate the radio while a second person can explain what the
operator is doing and answer any questions about Amateur Radio. Pick a
band, almost any band will do, the following chart will give you suggested
frequency segments that will be in use.

It is not limited to voice, you can use CW, PSK, satellite, internet or
whatever other mode there might be available for hams with scouts at their
side. All it takes is to make contact with a scout unit, schedule the time
and place, plan your station setup and test it out.
You can operate from home if you have the space, it could be one or two
scouts or it could be twenty, so planning is important. You could use your
mobile, the basic thing to remember is, is it safe and can they learn
anything from the experience. It has to be fun for both you and the scouts.
I encourage clubs to take on the project and get involved with the Scouting
Program. Scouts or their leaders can be a future member of your club

arrangements with a scout unit you can register at:

Cystic Fibrosis Cycle Event
Dennis/Les-
We really appreciate the help and support the from Calvert County and Anne
Arundel Radio groups. Communication is the key link to all that is vital
for the safety and effective running of the CF Cycle for Life and you
provide that important lifeline!
In the past we had the Ham Communication Base Station set-up at Herrington
Harbour South Marina (our location has moved slightly from the area we were
in last year), at each our Rest Stops (we've added an extra Rest Stop so
there will be a total of 5 this year), plus 2-3 operators in our SAG
vehicles along the course. We'll provide t-shirts, snacks and beverages and
you are welcome to join our post ride "Rolling Thunder" after party held at
Herrington Harbour Marina.
That's a quick summary as we get closer to the event, hopefully we can find
a time to meet and discuss the logistics in greater detail.
In the meantime, please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns
or if you need any additional information! Also, please provide me with the
official names of each of your groups so I have them for some thank you
acknowledgements.
Thank you for all your dedicated and continuing support of our efforts and
look forward to working with you and your teams on another wonderful and
safe CF Cycle for Life. We couldn't so it without you!
