Thanks Bob for the reminder. I had forgotten about them, and they would be a good last resort option. Before doing that I might just leave the BFO as is. For a while I was thinking about adding a synthesized local oscillator and BFO, and really ease the pain of oscillators, but in the end decided to leave most of W1DX’s design alone. I am tweaking it a bit by replacing the diode detector with a product detector.

Thanks and 73, Scott WA9WFA

One possibility (not as easy as just using a crystal (if you can get one and if you can trim it to the frequency you want) is to use a programmable synthesized source such as the QRP_Labs 'ProgRock':

Inexpensive - only $18 plus postage. If you want a 'tube' type, slip in under the chassis - I'll never tell anyone.
