Hi Bill (and List), Yes you’re right, technically the original maroon/brown Ranger is simply the Ranger. I got into the habit of calling it the Ranger 1 as I used to have several of those plus several Ranger 2’s at one time. They are all gone now except for the one Ranger.
Mine was given to me as well by a local OT in his 90’s. His family had told him that ‘when the time comes’ that they are planning to throw all his gear away. He gave it to me instead. It had literally been sitting on the basement floor next to his operating bench since the mid 1960’s. You can imagine the grime, cat hair, and what looked to be corrosion from mice that I had seen running around the basement. At first I was going to sell it because it looked so nasty. It turns out that what I thought was corrosion was just 55 years of basement grime that could be cleaned with GOJO,a toothbrush, and a lot of paper towels. It came out looking nearly new. I love using that transmitter on 80m and 40m!

Mine just lacks the "2" :) An old timer gave it to me in appreciation for taking him to club meetings and hamfests when he could no longer drive after dark. He also was one my boosters when I studied for my commercial license. I not only like the Ranger, it also has that sentimental value so it will only leave after my final QSO.
