Hi Scott,

The Ranger has an added appeal to me since it also covers 160 meters. I
am not a big gun on 160 but I have participated. I have a Heathkit
DX-100 here and I kept it instead of the Apache because it has 160
meters, too. The Apache would have stayed and the DX-100 sold except for
that.

When people talk about Ranger 1 and Ranger 2 I know of course exactly
what they mean. Once in a while I point that out just as a
clarification. The rangers came in factory assembled units and in kit
form. The factory units have parts riveted to the chassis while the kit
units have screws and nuts. Mine was a kit and was well done. It also
has the vacuum tube keying circuit (not a Morse iambic keyer) that was
an add-on kit in the earliest models and was standard in later 1's and I
think in all of the 2's There is no difference in the labels - just the
rivets or screws.

> Hi Bill (and List), Yes you’re right, technically the original maroon/brown Ranger is simply the Ranger. I got into the habit of calling it the Ranger 1 as I used to have several of those plus several Ranger 2’s at one time. They are all gone now except for the one Ranger.

It had literally been sitting on the basement floor next to his operating bench since the mid 1960’s. You can imagine the grime, cat hair, and what looked to be corrosion from mice that I had seen running around the basement. At first I was going to sell it because it looked so nasty. It turns out that what I thought was corrosion was just 55 years of basement grime that could be cleaned with GOJO,a toothbrush, and a lot of paper towels. It came out looking nearly new. I love using that transmitter on 80m and 40m!

Mine just lacks the "2" :) An old timer gave it to me in appreciation for taking him to club meetings and hamfests when he could no longer drive after dark. He also was one my boosters when I studied for my commercial license. I not only like the Ranger, it also has that sentimental value so it will only leave after my final QSO.
