Interesting project Keith, I hope you post updates on your progress.

About the only thing I can suggest (and you're probably aware of this) 
is that pro audio dealers sell "rack rails" in various shapes and 
lengths.    The basic type is angle stock that has all the holes on the 
required standard centers.   Some are drilled and tapped for 10-32 
others are just drilled and you use the clip-on type nuts.
