[Boatanchors] Loose Johnson Viking II meter glass

Hi Robert,

I had to deal with the loose glass in meters a couple of times. I don't
believe you can get a satisfactory repair (glass will separate again)
without disassembling the meter from the housing. Every kind of glue I
have ever used says right in the directions (anybody ever read
instructions?) the mating surfaces must be *clean* and dry. The part
about dry is not so difficult. It will be impossible to clean the glass
and housing without disassembling.

With interior of the housing and the glass accessible you can thoroughly
clean everything, get the glue you want in exactly the right place and
easily support the glass against the housing while the glue sets.
Gravity seems to work very well. You can remove fingerprints so easily
before reassembly.

Most meter movements that I have seen separate from the housing through
the rear while others separate out the front of the housing. Examination
of the meter assembly after it has been removed from the radio should be
obvious. Watch out for the meter zeroing screw (which is not a screw) to
get it reassembled correctly. It has to mate with the zeroing arm on the
meter movement or you will be unable to set zero. Test it for zeroing
immediately prior to final assembly of retaining screws, nuts, clips,
etc. I learned about this step the hard way and had to reverse the
entire assembly to get the zeroing parts mated right. Don't *force*
anything. It is easy to damage the meter movement. I bent one zeroing
arm and was very lucky to bend it back without breaking anything.

Just set aside a big chunk of time and work deliberately and carefully.

There are some hermetically sealed meters that you cannot disassemble
but I have never seen the glass separate in any of them. That does not
mean it can't happen. Failure in those is mostly from burnout of the
fine windings or possibly from being run over by a tank.

Good luck with your Viking rebuild. I have a set of Johnson Ranger gear
here and intend to keep it until my final transmission. The Ranger,
Johnson low pass filter, Matchbox, and electronic T-R switch.
