The R-1051 is a fine receiver (taxpayers paid $25,250 for it) - but as Bob
noted, it isn't for tuning around the bands but for set-and-forget on a
specific frequency.

The primary intended purpose of the R-1051 was for receiving SSB with
frequency-multiplexed RTTY signals in a 3kc voice channel - up to 16 RTTY
signals within a 3kc sideband (VFCT). With 85 Hz shift RTTY, frequency
accuracy and stability was Really Important. Typical operation was ISB with
simultaneous USB and LSB, with voice in USB and multi-channel RTTY in LSB,
or multi-channel RTTY in both USB and LSB.
The SSB mode has 3.2kc bandwidth, and the AM mode 7kc. CW is also 7kc which
could be an issue You may want to receive CW in the SSB mode and use an
outboard audio filter.

R-1051 maintenance was intended as module replacement. Special fixtures
were used for depot-level module troubleshooting. Swapping modules is easy,
replacing components in the jam-packed cordwood inside a module not so
much. But they are pretty damned reliable. You have the version with metal
chains that run between switch shafts in the modules, which is good. later
plastic chains may disintegrate over time.

You may want to pull the cover off the RF unit (with tubes) to look at the
turret and make sure none of the contacts have been bent by a previous
clumsy "repairman". Manuals are available on line. Some links are here -

If you need advice or parts, the R-1051 list isn't very active but has some
knowledgeable members -
