I had an R-1051B about 40 years ago. I kept it for a while and then
traded it for a RACAL RA-6217E.
It's an interesting set. The RF amp uses a tube (6BZ6 maybe?) and a
novel "carousel" to tune it (think of a turret with a vertical axis).
All the RF amp and mixer tuned circuit components are mounted on a
cylindrical form, IIRC about 8" diameter. When you set the frequency
with the front knobs, a servo motor rotates this carousel to bring the
appropriate components into circuit. As I remember it, this could be a
bit troublesome. Mine would sometimes not work.
Under the tuning knobs there is one of the screws which holds the
chassis into the cabinet. It should have a plastic cover on it.
Previous versions did not have that and users frequently would scrape
their thumbs on the edge while turning one of the frequency setting knobs.
It tunes in 100 Hz steps with a vernier for finer adjustment.
It was very accurate and stable with a good oven timebase.
It's great for monitoring a specific frequency but not a band cruiser.
That's all I remember right now. If I come up with anything else, I'll
post it.
