[Boatanchors] Tower erection

Plenty of guys on this list who know more about towers than I do, and 
there is no point in over-engineering a tower project, HOWEVER:

If it falls over and causes damage and/or injures or kills somebody, if 
it can be shown that anything was not exactly according to Hoyle, your 
insurance company will deny liability.

I would strongly suggest that you follow the manufacturers installation 
instructions, tempered by any additional local regulations, local wind, 
local soil, etc. and use the manufacturers recommended parts.

As for setting it plumb, a QUALITY long level will get the first section 
as has been discussed, but since it's a used tower, use a plumb bob on a 
string as you go up. This will show you any bent sections that you can't 
detect with the naked eye.
