[Boatanchors] TOWER ERECTION

Guys,
i did the same thing as Jim...but you need to make sure water doesn't lay around the base of the tower legs. I used a good rust preventative on the legs and the tower was up 30 years with no problems.

I respectfully disagree. Rohn sells "half sections" of tower
specifically intended for insertion in wet concrete for use as tower
bases.  I will take a chance here and say that Rohn's engineers probably
know what they are doing.

Also, I put up a 110 foot stick of Rohn 65G n 1970, and 35 years later
it was still sound.  Took it down due to a relocation in 2005.

I buried the first 20 ft  by boring a hole 10 ft deep  by 3 ft diameter,
and inserting the 20 ft first section into the hole as a base.  The
remainder of the section stuck out of the hole to 10 ft above grade.  I
then poured concrete in the hole, using the tower section cross bracing
as rebar.  It was easy to set the tower plumb by simply dropping a plumb
line from the top of  the section to ground level.

When the concrete was "set", I assembled 5 sections (100 ft) on the
ground,  and then put up the rest of the tower in one piece with the aid
of a local crane operator.  Installed 2 sets of guys, one set at 45 ft
and the other at 90 ft.

Got pix somewhere.
