I can see what you mean. This looks like a receiver
capacitor. My guess is that it was rated for about 600 volts
but probably was tested at well above that. Congratulations
on the fix. As far as sound, the AM transmitters I hear on
the Western AM net are all over the place. Microphones make
a difference. The Ranger I hear is somewhat shrill sounding
but that's about right for cutting through the noise. One
fellow has an old broadcast transmitter that sounds quite
mellow. Unfortunately there is so much noise on 75 at my
QTH that its sometimes hard to tell. The receiver is an RCA
AR-88 which has wide band capability and decent, but not
hi-fi, audio.
