If you are going to make changes to the oscillator tube socket to accommodate a 6AG7, make sure you ground pin 1 as the suppressor grid is tied here and to the metal cover.  Unlike the 6V6 which has the suppressor grid tied to the cathode and its metal cover is ungrounded. (I made up adapters instead with octal male plug and octal tube socket).  You will find the crystal current will be much less with the 6AG7 and you will have more grid current which you really don't need.  The 6AG7 is a much better solution.
