Hi Jack,
Gonset converters of old are 6 volts. They cover 80-40-20 meters. Some of the older AM mobile transmitters are 6 volts, but usually require a dynamotor for high voltage. Dynamotors are hard on batteries, and usually need replacement often. Also generators have a hard time keeping up, unless you have one from a 6v police car or fire engine.

12v conversion might be cheaper in the long run? take your time checking everything out.
Finding a vintage HF mobile antenna might take some time.

Subject: [Boatanchors] vintage mobile radio and antenna
I have a restored 1949 Ford F-1 pickup with the original electrical system which is 6 bold positive ground. I am considering adding a vintage radio. I could conver the electrical to 12 negative ground but it would not be simple nor would it be cheap. Is a vintage ham radio a pipe dream? What are your recommendations, suggestions, or warnings? Plus what type of antenna should Iook for? Thanks for your help.
