I don't know when I first heard the "term" but
it is fairly recent for me. I know that I never
HAD one. I got the idea shortly after the end
of WW II when I listened on the family RCA 10K
multiband console radio. It was probably the
75m band but I didn't know from squat at the time.
I learned the Morse with a friend who passed his
license some 10 years after I got mine. We used
a set of those old blue and white "telegraph" sets
with the dots and dashes of the code printed on
top of the battery compartment. That's probably
the absolute method to "learn" the code. I never
did get good, but finally passed the 20 in front of
FCC examiner on first try in 1979. I took ALL my
tests, Novice included, at FCC sessions on the way
up to Extra.
Too much effort involved to get license to even
consider tossing it all away and quitting!
