That works for me!  I definitely replace the suicide plugs on Heath, Johnson, etc., equipment with a 3-wire and a fuse.  Make sure that the hot (black) wire on the cord goes first to the fuse and then to the main power switch.

I was thinking of taking that killer half box off the back where the power cord connects to the feed thru caps. What about just doing away with the feed thru caps, running the new power cord thru one of the holes and mount a fuse holder in the other hole.
 
Of course a 3 wire power cord.
 
Any other suggestions?
