[Boatanchors] Heathkit Apache power cord

Gary -

Why not get an integrated power inlet and fuse fitting, as found on most
modern instruments. These fit the "standard" 3-wire power cord, as used
on computers and test equipment. I think the Apache needs about a 6 or
7 ampere fuse, if memory serves, and that is well within the ratings for
that type of portable cord.

There are many types to chose from in the Mouser catalog - check pages
1190-1250 or thereabouts. Typical cost is about $4.00 for a basic combo
inlet and fuse-holder, up to perhaps $20.00 for one with a built-in RFI
filter - and anything in-between. You can probably salvage one for
free from a junker computer power supply, and you get a DC fan for free
too!! I don't think you will have any trouble mounting it, but you may
have to move a few parts a bit.

You will have to do a bit of metal work to enlarge the hole in the
Apache chassis, but that is simply an exercise with a electric drill or
metal nibbler and a file. No big deal, really.

If this doesn't appeal to you, then get standard "3AG" type fuse holder,
which fits a 1/4" by 1 1/4" fuse. Make or enlarge a hole to 1/2", and
you're good to go. Put the fuse in only the "hot" side of the cord -
the black wire. The white wire is for the AC neutral, and must remain
un-fused. The green wire is of course ground, and must connect directly
to the chassis.

You will need a 16 AWG cord - the Apache draws a bit too much current
for a standard 18 GA cord.
