Note: using anything in place of the recommended tips can cause your
gun to heat up and fail.
The recommended tips have a "composite material" in the tip. Since they
are EASY to locate and buy.... why not do the proper thing? :-) (no
criticism here...just trying to tell the facts :-) ).
I used to put a copper wire in place of the tip.. did it for years...
found out that the tips Weller sells has the tip made of something more
than copper. This is supposed to concentrate the heat to the tip.
Any new tips should be solder covered....or TINNED... before use. Heat
up the tip and put solder over the area(s) where you will be soldering.
I cover both sides of the tip and the tip of the tip... :-D
Anyway, go to Practical Electronics in Tampa, FL at this website and
tell Dennis or Rick (the owners) that I sent you... they will ship you
the proper tips and not charge an arm and a leg for shipping. If you
prefer, they will put them in an envelop and send at a "decent price".
*_Practical Electronics email is: pelectro at tampabay.rr.com

Try it, you'll like it.
