[Boatanchors] SX-42

Bob,

You will definitely notice a "night and day" difference between your SX-110 and an SX-100. When I first set up my Ranger/Desk KW I paired it with a National HRO-50 like the Johnson advertisement. One stint as net control for the Midwest Classic Radio Net showed me the selectivity of the HRO-50 wasn't quite up to handling weak AM stations with lots of QRM and QRN and for a number of sessions I used my SX-100 which worked very well. The combination of selectable sideband on AM along with several degrees of selectivity worked wonders in making it easier to copy weak stations.

I now use an SX-88 with the Ranger/Desk which looks and sounds nice but requires bumping the bandspread tuning instead of flipping a switch to choose AM sidebands. Although the higher Q IF transformers should give it a little better selectivity curve than the SX-100 it isn't as convenient to use. But I wanted one for years, it looks cool and sounds great so it is staying where it is and my SX-100 is now hanging out with a Johnson Adventurer.

When you get the SX-100, get/use a proper signal generator to align the 50.75 Khz. 2'nd IF since this is critical to proper performance. If you find that one (or both) of the 2'nd mixer crystals have drifted slightly you can adjust the final IF alignment frequency slightly to compensate. Finally, if you have a strong 1650 Khz. broadcast station nearby you will probably need to put a tuned trap on the antenna input to prevent interference on the lower two ranges.

Back in the 60's one of my good friends had a nice SX-28. I guess I was
spoiled by it. I've been looking for a decent SX-71 I can afford. I missed
one last year. It was original except one small knob. But I waited to long
and when I went back to get it was already gone. That was just 30 minutes.

I have been thinking about trying a SX-100. I have a SX-110 that I think
looks pretty good but it leaves a lot to be desired in operation.

I did my novice year with an original S-38 ( the one with the real BFO). I
was 22 then and I did not know better. I learned all about AC/DC radios REAL
QUICK! I was a USAF S/SGT at the time.
