John - I have been on facebook for 2 years and have yet to get any spam. 
It works as it is supposed to. I find it to be a great tool for 
communicating with my ham friends and other friends. It also has been a 
great tool for locating old friends.

site goes through address books and sends Friending requests to 
everybody therein."

I seriously doubt that. Sounds like you have little knowledge as to how 
it works since you don't use it.

It sounds like people are confusing you with a person of the same name 
and that is where the requests are coming from.
