[Boatanchors] [Heathkit] Help w/ tubes

Hi Dave,
Have pondered this question myself for the three Heath high voltage reg
supplies at my QTH. The tubes in that relatively simple application are
not all that critical if they can handle the current (50 mA each).
I am planning to try the 6DQ6. It should easily handle the current and can
certainly handle the voltage. The main issue is the need for a plate cap
in place of pin #3. An adapter and an insulated top cap would be ideal if
plug-compatibility is to be maintained. Otherwise the only pin of concern
is bringing the plate pin (3) out to the top cap. All the other pins match
the 6L6GC.
The only drawback I can seen is the somewhat greater filament
current. The other subs that come to mind are the much-in-demand
audiophile tubes with equally high prices. The top-cap horizontal output
tubes are mostly ignored by the audio crowd for good reasons but would seem
to be OK inside a protective metal boxed device like the Heath reg power
supplies.
If you can find metal 6L6 tubes, my Heath PS-4 uses those. Audio buffs
avoid those because they don't glow.
