This should be a good lesson for those into working with old gear. Start
off by cleaning all the contacts carefully. This includes switches, tube
sockets, variable capacitor bearings and the like. Be especially careful with
wafer switches so as not to saturate the wafers which can cause them to
warp. There is going to be controversy here, but all electrolytic capacitors
should be changed from the start. If they have not already failed, chances
are they will soon with possible catastrophic results. Paper caps should be
replaced, too. As many restorers have found out, a little extra time spent
on the project before firing it up can make a big difference and save a lot
of hair pulling in the long run.
