Subject: [Boatanchors] Re: upgrade question
A lot of you guys are making a point that I probably should have but failed
to make . Amateur radio is very diverse. It always has been at least as far
back as my memory goes. Some of us like one thing and others something
else. That is healthy for the service. I happen to like and practice Morse
code. But if everyone else who likes something else, was suddenly
delicensed, (I am not sure that is a word but it ought to be)the ham bands
would be pretty lonely about now. I also like and use tube gear that I have
restored myself but in all honesty when I hear a CW or SSB signal I can't
tell whether it is produced by a tube rig or a computerized modern rig.
(I'll admit I can on AM though, or at least I think I can). I love building
gear, right now I am finishing a 40 meter tranceiver using phasing
techniques and it is going to be a lot of fun. Next I want to build a really
good tube receiver. Why ? Because I enjoy it and want to see just what my
limits are. No I am not looking to bring back hollow state electronics but
for those of us who enjoy "Tube Rigs" why not? One thing we all should be
aware of is this, if we as amateurs, are going to push the envelope of
commucications development, as had long been a part of our heritage, it is
likely going to be the whiz kids who are comfortable with computers who do
it. I envy the opportunity they have and wish them well. I hope I stay
around long enough to see some of the changes they make possible. Meanwhile,
I think I will fire up my HT37 and Sp600 and see what is on the lower bands
